Prednisone

Synonyms: Deltasone, Meticorten, Orasone

It is a steroid drug used to reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms in a variety of disorders that include rheumatoid arthritis and severe cases of asthma. It may be given to treat primary or secondary hormone replacement therapy due to adrenal cortex insufficiency or lack of sufficient adrenal hormone in the body. It is three to five times as potent as cortisone of hydrocortisone.

Indications:

Prednisone is used to medicate the following illnesses: Abnormal adrenal gland development, severe allergic conditions, blood disorders, certain cancers (along with other drugs), diseases of the connective tissue including systemic lupus erythematosus, various kinds of eye diseases, flare-ups of multiple sclerosis, fluid retention due to "nephrotic syndrome" (a condition in which impair the kidneys causes protein lost in the urine), lung diseases, including tuberculosis. Meningitis (inflamed membranes around the brain), prevention of organ rejection, rheumatoid arthritis and related disorders, severe flare-ups of ulcerative colitis or enteritis (inflammation of the intestines), skin diseases, thyroid gland inflammation and complicated trichinosis.

How to take:

Acute, severe conditions: 5-60 mg/day in four equally divided doses after meals and bedtime. Decrease gradually by 5-10 mg for 4-5days to establish minimum maintenance dosage or discontinue altogether until symptom recur. Take prednisone with food to avoid stomach upset. Please see label. Precautions:

Do not violate instructions. Do not exceed dose and do not stop abruptly unless ordered. Avoid vaccine, crowds and infected person because the drug is immunosuppressant.
